One of 2020’s hottest trends is the oversized band t-shirt look! The good news about this trend is that basically anyone can pull it off, with little to no effort required. Bonus points if you’re a rock music fan, but to be honest, you can definitely pull it off without knowing a single song of the band that’s on your t-shirt…
WHERE TO BUY THEM
While there are tons of different brands selling oversized band t-shirts, unfortunately the prices often range upwards of $40-$100+ at stores like Urban Outfitters andRevolve. As someone who preaches understanding the difference between investment pieces (things you will wear for years, that are worth spending extra $ on) and statement pieces (trendy or seasonal items, that you’re better off spending less on), these t-shirts definitely fall into the first category.
So if you’re with me and looking for cheaper alternatives (and had no luck scrounging through your parents closets for retro 80’s tees), Ardene is the place to go! Ranging from $12-$20, they offer a wide range of graphic and band t-shirts for a fraction of the price. With everything from AC/DC, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, even the likes of Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande and more, they’re constantly adding new bands to their graphic tees collection. So check often!
HOW TO STYLE THEM
There are so many ways to style band t-shirts whether your own fashion take is edgy, feminine, or anything in between! A few of my favourites are:
1. Tuck into shorts/skirt: an easy way to get a fun but slightly dressy look. You can make this look edgy or girly, depending on what the other pieces look like. I opted for belted shorts & a pair of mules for a pulled-together summer day’s look.
2. Pair with denim: band tees and a good paid of jeans is a no-brainer. It gives off a casual, effortless look and you can use accessories to add a little extra to your style. I threw on a belt, a cross-body belt bag, sandals and sunnies.
3. Layer over bike shorts: what I like to call the summer version of leggings and a hoodie. Get sporty by throwing on bike shorts and your favourite tee for a comfy, lounge-worthy, totally on-trend look. I chose statement sandals and a chunky headband to add a little extra to the outfit.
WHAT SIZE TO GO FOR
You’ll most likely want an oversized fit with your band t-shirt, but how many sizes up all depends on the look you’re after.
If you want to layer it over top of bike shorts or wear on it’s own for a t-shirt dress style, size up 2-3 sizes. I opted for size XL in the Metallica t-shirt and love that it fully covers my bum. If you want something that’s better suited to tucking into jeans or hanging loose, 1-2 sizes is likely plenty.
Beware of t-shirts that are already oversized! Read the product description to be sure, but oftentimes these styles are designed to give you an oversized fit without sizing up. In these cases, stick with your regular size or maybe size up 1!
